Shut out of the house, just handed the keys to a new place, or lying awake wondering about the back door? Runcorn Locksmith handles residential locksmith work across Runcorn, from a lockout in the small hours to a booked lock change or a security upgrade. Emergency calls are answered 24 hours a day, every day, and there is no call-out charge. Call 01928 611001.

Most people ringing a home locksmith are not sure which service they need, so this page is a guide to finding it. If you cannot get into your house or flat, or a broken lock means a door will not secure, treat it as an emergency and call now. If the lock still works and the home is secure, the job can normally be booked as an appointment that suits you.

What Homeowners Actually Call Us About

Domestic locksmith work covers three broad things: getting you in when you are stuck, fixing locks that have gone wrong, and planned work to make a house more secure. Below are the six situations that bring most people to us, each with the page that covers it properly.

01

You are locked out

The door has swung shut with the keys on the kitchen table, or they went missing on a night out, or the lock simply refuses to turn. These doors are usually opened without damage, and the lock normally goes on working afterwards. We answer at any hour: see locked out or our emergency locksmith page.

02

You have just moved in

There is no telling how many copies of the old keys were cut or whose drawer they are sitting in. Changing the outside cylinders on the day you move puts the keys back under your control, and they can usually be keyed alike so one key works every door.

View Lock Replacement
03

You have lost your keys

This is not the same as being locked out, because the missing keys may still open your front door for whoever has them. If they went astray away from home, a new cylinder stops every old key working in one go. Go to lock replacement, or locked out if you also cannot get in.

04

Something has stopped working

A key that sticks, a handle that will not lift, a door you have to shove before it locks. Get it looked at before it gets worse, and do not force the key or handle, which can do more damage. It is often an adjustment rather than a new lock: see lock repair or.

05

You have been broken into

If there is any immediate danger, stay outside and call 999. Once the police say repairs can go ahead, we assess the damaged doors and locks and make the house secure, boarding up where a full repair has to wait. See burglary repairs and.

06

You want the place more secure

Nothing has happened, but the locks feel old, or awkward, or the back door looks flimsy. We can assess the doors and windows involved and explain your options. It normally starts with the front door cylinder and works outwards: see lock installation and.

A Door-by-Door Look at Your Home

A home is usually only as secure as its weakest opening, and that is seldom the front door. Walk round your own house in this order and you will have a fair idea of where any work is needed.

01

The front door

The door everyone thinks about, and usually the best protected. On a timber door, check the faceplate on the edge of the door for a British Standard mortice lock with a kitemark. On a uPVC or composite door, look at the face of the cylinder for a star or Diamond rating. The detail sits in our BS 3621 explained guide; for upgrades see lock replacement or.

02

The back and patio doors

Often the weakest point and the least thought about, because nobody can see them from the road, which is exactly why they get used. Back, French and patio doors may run on cylinders, multipoint mechanisms or other hardware, and older sliding doors often still have the locks they were fitted with. A handle that is hard to lift, locking points that will not engage or a key that resists are all signs it needs attention: see lock repair or.

03

The windows

Some insurance policies specify key-operated locks on accessible windows, meaning the ground floor and anything you could reach from a flat roof, balcony or extension. Check that those windows shut properly and that their locks work and the keys can be found, then compare what you have with your policy wording. Broken or missing window locks are common and inexpensive to put right:.

04

The garage, shed and side gate

The forgotten ones. A side gate that swings open gives someone cover to work on the back of the house unseen, and a shed or garage often holds both valuable things and the tools that make forcing a door easier. Make sure each latch, padlock and lock still works and still suits the opening.

A Free Home Security Check

[CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether a free home security check is offered. If it is not, delete this whole section rather than softening it.]

Security around a home is about more than the front door, and the openings people see least are the ones most often missed. On a free check, a locksmith walks round the house with you and covers:

  • Each door: whether it closes properly, the lock runs smoothly and the key turns without force, bearing in mind that timber, uPVC and composite doors lock in different ways
  • Whether timber doors have the right lock: BS 3621 is commonly relevant to qualifying key-operated lock assemblies on timber doors, while uPVC and composite doors often use different systems, so we check what you have against your insurer's requirements
  • Accessible windows, the garage, shed and side gate
  • A plain list of what is fine and what is not, with a price for anything worth doing

Nothing is fitted on the day unless you ask for it, and there is no obligation. Book on 01928 611001.

What Homeowners Most Often Get Wrong

A lock can look sturdy and still be worn, unsuitable or wrong for the door it is on. These five beliefs come up again and again, and each one is a sign that a closer look may be due.

01

"It's a five-lever lock, so it's insurance-approved."

A five-lever lock is not automatically certified to BS 3621. Look for the British Standard number and certification mark, then compare the lock with what your policy asks for. See BS 3621 explained.

02

"It's just a bit stiff."

Stiffness usually points to misalignment, wear or a fault starting in the mechanism, and forcing it can finish the job or leave the door unable to lock.

View Lock Repair
03

"The uPVC door won't lock, so I need a new door."

Very rarely. The mechanism or the alignment is nearly always the fix.

View uPVC Door Lock Services
04

"I've lost my keys, so I'll get a spare cut."

A spare solves nothing while the lost set still opens the door.

05

"The safe is heavy enough on its own."

A safe that is not bolted down may not carry the rating it was bought for.

Renting, or Letting a Property Out?

Around 41% of Runcorn households rent their home, 14.1% privately and 27.0% from a social landlord (Census 2021, TS054), so this comes up often. If you are a tenant, call your landlord or letting agent first where you can: they may hold a spare key, and they may need to agree any planned change to the locks. If they cannot be reached or cannot come out, we can open the door, and we will normally ask you to show that you live there. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: proof-of-residence process.] See locked out.

Landlords and letting agents: changing locks between tenancies is routine and can be timed around a changeover date, and cylinders across several properties can be keyed alike where one person needs access to them all. See our landlord and HMO services, or commercial locksmith for business premises.

Locksmith pricing

What Does a Home Locksmith Cost?

The right next step, and the price, depend partly on whether you own the home, rent it or manage it. A standard weekday lockout (Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm) starts from £70.80 including VAT (£59 plus VAT); that is a starting figure for a straightforward job in those hours, not a fixed price. For anything else, describe the door, window or lock on the call and you will be given a price before any work begins. There is no call-out charge. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.

For more detail, read our full guide to locksmith prices in Runcorn, or call 01928 611001 for a price now.

What affects the cost?

Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.

Domestic Locksmith Services Across Runcorn

We work on homes across Runcorn, from flats to suburban semis.

The town's housing is a broad mix. Of 29,193 households, 34.0% live in terraced houses, 33.5% in semis, 21.0% in detached homes and 10.9% in flats (Census 2021, TS044), so a typical call is to a house with its own front and back doors rather than a shared entrance. Age varies too: about half of the town's homes (50.1%) were built between 1945 and 1982, 18.4% before 1940 and 31.3% since 1983 (VOA Council Tax stock, 31 March 2026). That spread means everything from timber doors with mortice locks to uPVC multipoint systems turns up on the same day's work. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: technician view of the door and lock types most common locally.]

Wherever you are in town, emergencies are covered around the clock, there is no call-out charge, and our technicians are DBS-checked [PROVIDER PACK: DBS check evidence]. Areas we cover include Weston, Westfield, Halton, Brookvale, Higher Runcorn and Grange, across the WA7 postcode district and the edge of WA4 (part) (ONSPD, Feb 2026). [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: genuine coverage areas and the six priority area pages.]
