uPVC Door Not Locking Properly?

Runcorn Locksmith fixes uPVC and composite door locks across Runcorn: multipoint mechanisms that have stopped working, cylinders that have worn out and doors that have sagged out of line with the frame. You probably do not need a new door, and you may not even need a whole new lock. There is no call-out charge, and emergency calls are answered around the clock, every day of the year.

Usually one part has given up: the cylinder, something in the multipoint mechanism, or a door no longer square in its frame. The usual signs: the handle lifts but nothing locks, the handle has gone limp, or the key turns and the door still stays shut. Whichever it is, stop forcing a stiff key or handle, because extra pressure loads the mechanism and can turn a small lock repair into a bigger one.

Call 01928 611001: describe what the door is doing and we will tell you the likely fault and the price.

What Is Your uPVC Door Actually Doing?

How the door behaves usually points to the part that has failed before anyone arrives. That means the price you hear on the phone can be more accurate, although the cause is always confirmed on site before anything is fitted.

01

The handle lifts but the door will not lock

The most common uPVC fault. Usually the locking cam inside the gearbox has sheared, so lifting the handle no longer pushes the hooks and bolts out. Sometimes the locking points are hitting the frame instead of the keeps, which is an alignment fault. Don't keep heaving on the handle. We check the door and the lock together and find out which it is before replacing anything. More on this in our guide to why a uPVC door will not lock.

02

The handle has dropped or feels floppy

A limp handle can mean loose fixings or a worn spindle, but more often the gearbox has failed inside. The handle loses its grip on the mechanism and droops. The door may still be locked, because the hooks can stay engaged even though the mechanism has stopped working. Weeks of growing stiffness often come first. We check the handle and the mechanism together before deciding what the repair is.

03

The key turns but the door will not open

A key that turns freely does not prove the rest of the system is working. A snapped spring in the gearbox can stop the latch drawing back, or a worn cam on the cylinder may no longer drive the mechanism. Those are two different parts at two different prices. If the key or handle meets hard resistance, stop, because pushing harder only adds strain. Our guide explains why a uPVC door will not open.

04

The door is locked shut and will not open at all

A seized gearbox or a hook wedged against its keep is the usual cause, and poor alignment adds pressure on the locking points. Call rather than force it. Forcing a jammed multipoint often turns a gearbox repair into a full mechanism replacement plus a non-destructive entry. The opening method depends on the fault and the door's condition, chosen to limit avoidable damage. Need help now? Ring our emergency locksmith line, or.

05

You have to lift and shove to get it to lock

This is alignment, not the lock. The door has dropped on its hinges, or the frame has moved, so the hooks no longer meet the keeps cleanly. Every forced lift loads the gearbox, and this is the fault that eventually breaks it. Adjusting the door now costs far less than replacing the mechanism later.

06

The key will not turn from outside

This usually points to the key or a worn euro cylinder rather than the mechanism, especially if the door still locks from inside. A badly aligned door or a tight mechanism can also make the key stiff. Leave the key alone if it will not move, and let us confirm the cause before recommending a repair or a new part. The cylinder is the cheapest part to change, and it is a good moment to consider an anti-snap upgrade.

If one of these sounds like your door, call 01928 611001 and tell us which.

The Three Parts That Fail on a uPVC Door

What most people call "the lock" on a uPVC door is three separate things, and the cost of putting each one right differs a lot. There is more detail in our guide to common uPVC lock mechanism problems.

01

The euro cylinder

This is the barrel your key goes into. It works alongside the central gearbox but can usually be changed on its own, and it is the quickest part on the door to replace [PROVIDER PACK: typical cylinder replacement time]. Any new one has to be the right size and has to work with the existing lock and security hardware. A cylinder that sticks out past the handle plate is a weakness in itself, because it gives a snapping attack something to grip. Size and security rating both affect the price, and the options are explained with their prices before anything is fitted. For more, see lock replacement and our guide to anti-snap locks.

02

The multipoint gearbox

The gearbox sits in the door edge behind the handle. It takes the movement of your key and handle and passes it to the hooks and bolts along the multipoint system. A failure can stop the door locking or unlocking. It is the most common failure on a uPVC door, and industry guidance gives a typical service life of roughly eight to fifteen years, depending on use and alignment. Sometimes the gearbox can be changed without replacing the whole multipoint strip, but that depends on compatibility and the state of the rest of the mechanism. Price turns on gearbox-only versus a full strip, which differ in parts and labour, and on part availability [PROVIDER PACK: typical gearbox replacement time].

03

The door alignment

Alignment is not part of the lock, but it controls how the locking points meet the keeps in the frame, and it causes a large share of lock failures. As the door settles on its hinges, the hooks stop landing cleanly, the key and handle stiffen, and the strain passes into the gearbox. A door can need adjusting even when the mechanism has not failed at all. Cost depends on the cause and how much adjustment is needed. Fixing it early is the cheapest repair you can make on a uPVC door.

You Usually Do Not Need a Whole New Mechanism

When a multipoint lock fails, the fault is normally inside the central gearbox, not along the full-height strip running down the door edge. If the strip, hooks and bolts are in good order, a compatible gearbox can often be fitted on its own. That is a much smaller job than replacing the whole mechanism, and it is the difference between an honest quote and an inflated one.

A complete strip is genuinely needed in a few situations: physical damage from a forced entry, corrosion along the strip, or an older system whose gearbox is no longer made. Gearboxes come in several UK manufacturer families and backset sizes, so identifying the exact one fitted to your door decides whether it can be done on the same visit [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: which gearbox and mechanism ranges are carried as stock, evidence items 17 and 18]. If a full lock replacement is the right answer, you are told why before any work starts.

And You Almost Certainly Do Not Need a New Door

Many people with a failed uPVC lock ring the double glazing firm, or start pricing a new door. Often only one part of the locking system needs attention, and sometimes the central gearbox alone is what has stopped the door locking. A failed gearbox, a worn cylinder and a door that has dropped are all hardware faults. A locksmith fixes them for a fraction of the cost of a door. Window companies fit doors; locksmiths fix the locks in them. The right fix depends on the fault, whether replacement parts are compatible and the condition of the rest of the mechanism, all of which we check on site. To book a lock repair, call 01928 611001.

Upgrading the Cylinder While We Are There

The euro cylinder is where your key goes, and it can often be changed without touching the gearbox or the rest of the multipoint mechanism. It may need replacing because it is damaged, unreliable or the wrong length for the door. If it is being replaced anyway, choosing a security-rated cylinder adds little to the job and closes off the most common attack on uPVC doors. Some home insurance policies specify a particular standard, so check your own wording. To see what you have now, look at the cylinder face:

  • A star mark showing a rating to TS 007
  • A Diamond mark showing approval to SS 312 Diamond
  • No mark at all, which usually means a standard cylinder

The options may include TS 007 three-star and SS 312 Diamond-rated cylinders, and any replacement must be the right size for the door. An upgrade is a recommendation, not a requirement: if you would rather keep a standard cylinder, we replace it like for like. More in our guide to anti-snap locks and lock snapping, or see lock installation for new fittings.

Composite Doors Too

We cover composite doors too. Many use the same euro cylinders and multipoint mechanisms as uPVC doors, so a fault shows up the same way, in the key, the handle or the locking points, and poor alignment can stop the mechanism just as easily. The slab is denser and the hardware sizes vary more, so we assess the door and its fittings before recommending a repair or a part. For a full swap, see lock replacement.

What Does a uPVC Door Lock Repair Cost?

No single price covers every uPVC lock repair, because the work could be an adjustment, a repair or a new part. A cylinder swap is usually the cheapest outcome and a full mechanism replacement the most expensive, with a gearbox-only repair in between. What decides the figure:

  • Which part has failed: cylinder, gearbox or the strip itself
  • Whether the gearbox can be fitted on its own or the full strip is needed
  • Whether you choose a security-rated cylinder upgrade
  • Whether the door also needs realigning
  • What time of day the work is done

We cover uPVC and compatible composite doors, check the lock and the alignment together, and explain the repair and replacement options before you decide. There is no call-out charge at any hour. You get a price on the call based on what you describe, and if anything found on site changes it, you are told before any work begins. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.

How the Job Works

  1. Describe the symptom on the phone, or send a photo of the door edge, the handle and the lock face [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether photos can be received, and on which channel].
  2. We work out the likely fault and give you a price.
  3. A technician [PROVIDER PACK: DBS check evidence] confirms the fault on site, identifies the exact mechanism and explains your options before fitting anything.
  4. The repair is finished, and the door is tested locking and unlocking from both sides, with the alignment checked.

Mechanisms vary by maker and backset, so a photo sharpens the phone quote. Questions first? Contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions

My uPVC door handle has dropped and will not lift. What is wrong?

Almost certainly the multipoint gearbox. When it fails inside, the handle loses its connection to the mechanism and droops. The door may still be locked, because the hooks and bolts can stay engaged, but the mechanism has stopped working. Do not force it; call and we diagnose before replacing anything.

Do I need a whole new mechanism or just the gearbox?

Usually just the gearbox. If the rest of the multipoint strip is still serviceable, a compatible gearbox can be fitted on its own. The existing gearbox has to be identified first, so compatibility and part availability can be checked. A full strip is needed only where it is damaged, corroded or obsolete.

Does a broken uPVC lock mean I need a new door?

Not necessarily. Adjusting the door or replacing one lock component often clears the fault. A lock fault on its own does not mean you need a new door; that depends on the door's overall condition. A failed gearbox, a worn cylinder or a dropped door are all hardware jobs.

Why do I have to lift and shove the handle to lock my door?

The door has dropped or the frame has moved, so the hooks are no longer meeting the keeps cleanly. It starts as an alignment fault, but every forced lift loads the gearbox. Adjusting it now is the cheaper fix.

How long does a uPVC lock repair take?

A cylinder change is the quickest job on the door. A gearbox or full mechanism replacement takes longer, depending on the door and the system fitted, and an alignment adjustment varies with how far the door has dropped [PROVIDER PACK: typical durations for cylinder, gearbox, full mechanism and alignment work].

How long should a uPVC door lock last?

Industry guidance puts a typical multipoint gearbox at roughly eight to fifteen years. Heavy use and long periods out of alignment shorten that considerably.

Can you get me in if the door is locked shut and will not open?

Yes. A uPVC door that is locked shut usually has a seized gearbox or a jammed hook rather than a cylinder fault, and the aim is to release the mechanism without damaging the door. Call before forcing it; emergency calls are answered 24 hours a day.

Should I use WD40 on a stiff uPVC lock?

Not as a lubricant. WD40 cleans and displaces water rather than lubricating for the long term, and over time it can draw dirt into the mechanism. A dry graphite or silicone lubricant is a better choice. If the handle is still stiff after that, the cause is usually alignment or the gearbox, so call 01928 611001.
